Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga's presidential campaign spokesperson Prof. Makau Mutua, has revealed that Deputy President William Ruto has limited choices in selecting his preferred running mate in the upcoming General Election.

In a TV interview on Sunday, March 20, Prof Mutua noted that the DP had pitched camp in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region in the recent past- pouring his resources in the region in a bid to win the supporters.

He added that Odinga had a much favourable option in choosing a running mate from any part of the country as he had amassed support across various regions.

"I think for Azimio la umoja we don't think the choice of a running mate is going to be the turning point of our campaign. We are very happy with where we are as you see in the polls. We have flexibility on our side as opposed to our competitors," Mutua stated.

The law professor addressed Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka's controversial remarks about the signing of the coalition agreement.

Mutua affirmed that Kalonzo made the statement due to the fact that he was trying to find his footing within the Azimio family.

The vocal ally of Odinga added that the former Vice President's concerns would be ironed out with time as they build a formidable force to face off with the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

"Kalonzo knows what's at stake in this country at the General Election. What's happening with Musyoka is that he's trying to find his positioning within the Azimio la Umoja movement and that's okay," he noted.

Raila's presidential campaign spokesperson further hinted at what the Azimio la Umoja is looking for even as it scouts for a running mate ahead of the polls. He noted that the best fit would be someone who has the numbers as well as a leader who is ready to step in from the first day in office.

The choice of running mate slot is perceived by many as the make or break point for either the Azimio la Umoja movement or the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

Critics and pundits have thrown their weight behind a running mate candidate from the Mt Kenya region as the favourable choice for either faction in the run up to the General Election.

Raila and Ruto are holding their cards next to their chests even as the clock fast ticks towards August 9.
