The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has published timelines to be observed by political parties and aspirants ahead of the August 9 polls.

In a statement dated Tuesday, April 5, the electoral body stated that the timelines were to guide the commission in its preparations ahead of the August 9 polls.

The timelines published cover party primaries, submission of party registers and lists of aspirants.

"The Commission draws the attention of political parties intending to participate in the upcoming General Election to the following statutory timelines. The Commission urges political parties and independent candidates to adhere to the timelines and shall periodically provide updates on General Election activities," read the statement in part.

In the timelines, IEBC directed political parties to submit a list of all their aspirants before Saturday, April 9.

All political parties were further directed to conduct their nominations by April 22. Consequently, political parties will be required to submit the names of all nominated aspirants by Thursday, April 28.

However, IEBC warned political parties to adhere to the law during the nominations stating that it will not clear aspirants whose nominations do not comply with the law.

"The Commission shall reject the candidature of any person nominated by a political party for any elective position if that candidate is not qualified or eligible for election under the Constitution, the Elections Act, 2011, or any other written law.

"The Commission shall reject a Nomination Certificate that is not duly signed or bears any alterations," read the IEBC guidelines.

Presidential aspirants on the other hand are directed to submit duly filled forms to the commission by Monday, May 23, for their clearance.

"Submit, duly filled forms of supporters bearing the names, signatures, identity cards/passport numbers of at least 2,000 voters registered in each of a majority of the counties.

"Corresponding copies of the identification documents of the voters who have appended their signatures in support of their candidature, and an electronic list of supporters in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet format," IEBC directed.

Independent candidates will be required to submit their papers to the commission by Monday, May 2, with IEBC noting that it will publish all the names of independent candidates participating in the elections on Friday, May 13.
