A 20-kilometre long traffic snarl-up has caused a standoff along Mombasa Highway at Mtito Andei.

Motorists and passengers were forced to sleep on the road at Mtito Andei and Voi after an accident caused the traffic snarl-up.

Some of the motorists who were stuck on the road advised others to postpone their travel plans.

"The huge traffic jam in the Tsavo near Mtito Andei where vehicles to and from Mombasa have been stuck since last night till now will definitely affect today’s departures.

"If you are planning to leave Nairobi for Mombasa or Mombasa for Nairobi, be prepared for inconveniences," one Mohammed Onyango cautioned.

Travellers also speculated that the situation was likely to cause fare hikes since bus operators were forced to use more fuel while stuck in the snarl-up.

"I haven't reached Mtito Andei despite boarding a bus at 8pm last night from Mombasa. Crazy traffic. Expect crazy fare hikes this weekend," a tweep Daiv Mwenda remarked.

Most Mombasa bound buses parked at Darus-Salaam Hotel in Mtito Andei after the freak accident involving a truck in Tsavo National Park.

Bus operators missed a statement apologizing to their patrons and noted that they were forced to halt operations due to the congestion on the busy highway.

"Delay Alert! We wish to inform all our esteemed clients of the expected delays in today’s schedules across all our destinations due to yesterday’s incidents at Mtito Andei that have caused huge traffic snarl-ups both ways," a Tahmeed bus operator told clients.

Dreamline Express, whose buses were also stuck noted that they will experience delays and also called for passengers to be calm as police worked to manage the traffic.

"We anticipate delayed departures as a result of the current snarl-up stretching from Kanga to Mtito Andei and beyond on the Mombasa - Nairobi highway.

"The pictured bus has been at Mtito Andei since 3am but the traffic cops have managed to control the situation and traffic has started to flow albeit slowly," the statement read.
