Machakos governor and Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader, Alfred Mutua has joined Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
In a press conference on Monday, May 9, Mutua noted that he had already signed the agreement with the coalition, pointing out that he was influenced by transparency and vision in the Kenya Kwanza camp.
He noted that the Azimio la Umoja only favoured some political parties, leaving others like MCC in the dark.
"To this end, we have decided to break our ties with Azimio la Umoja. Therefore the contract between Azimio and MCC is null and void."
"We cannot continue to be in a country of a few millionaires. Kenyans want jobs, more money, and the right leadership. I am aware that five other parties are about to leave due to its exclusiveness and zoning terms."
"I will campaign for William Ruto. He is a good man and I believe he will make a change as he becomes the next leader of this country," he stated.
Revealing the agreement between the Kenya Kwanza and his party, Governor Mutua noted that inclusivity was a key aspect.
"The agreement within the Kenya Kwanza alliance includes zero zoning whereby all our aspirants will be on the ballot. One way or another we will be in government."
He noted that there are no permanent enemies in politics and hence he joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition in order to churn the best way forward for his party.
"I have been one of the fiercest critics of Ruto, but if you look at the scenario in this country, you need to put the needs of Kenyans first."
"The decision is not personal, it is about the party. My interests are that the Maendeleo Chap Chap party should grow and let's be honest, the Azimio la Umoja has chased us away hence we will go where we are needed," he noted.
Earlier, Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula had welcomed the governor into Kenya Kwanza.
"Congratulations Maendeleo Chap Chap and PAA political parties for joining the Kenya Kwanza Alliance Coalition. Your entry brings in additional energy and guarantees, even more, KKA’s assured victory in the August 9th General elections," Ford Kenya's party leader Moses Wetangula stated.
The governor had initially moved to court to compel the Azimio faction to furnish him with the coalition agreement.
He had alleged that the final agreement was altered and thus the contents kept secret.
"It's unfortunate that we're in a coalition relationship whose members have to go to court to get what's their automatic right," he stated.
Dr. Mutua also claimed that the agreement contained zoning of some counties, which would ultimately lock out some of the affiliate parties from fielding candidates in certain regions.
"We have been operating in good faith but this has not been reciprocated. There is a clear and present danger that aspirants in parties in Azimio will be denied their democratic opportunity to be on the ballot. This we cannot accept.," he stated.
Previously, governor Mutua had written to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), seeking to withdraw from the coalition.
