8 Killed in Dawn Maai Mahiu Accident

At least 8 people have been killed and over a dozen others injured after a bus they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck along the Nairobi - Narok highway.

The Saturday, May 21, Maai Mahiu dawn accident involved a bus that was heading to Kisii and a truck heading to Nairobi from Narok.

According to Nakuru traffic base police commander, Beatrice Kuragui, the eight - four men and four women - died on the spot.

"We are currently at the accident scene and are moving the wreckage to a police base. We rushed here immediately after an alarm was sounded," Kuragui told Kenyans.co.ke

"There is no traffic snarl-up, and the movement of vehicles is smooth as we managed to secure the area," she added. 

Four other passengers sustained serious injuries and were reported to be in a coma.

The four and other survivors were rushed to a medical facility in Naivasha where they are receiving treatment.

Data provided by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicates that in 2022, more than 1,300 people have lost their lives in road accidents.

The 1,345 fatalities recorded since January 2022 translates to a 15.2 per cent increase when compared to the 1,168 deaths recorded over a similar period as of April 11, 2021.

Pedestrians death tallied at 457 up from 374 in 2021, representing a 22.1 per cent increase.

Motorcyclist deaths increased by 25.33 per cent to 381 up from 304 last year while pillion passenger deaths stood at 137 up from 105 in 2021.
