Azimio La Umoja One Kenya presidential running mate, Martha Wangari Karua, on Thursday, June 9, went to her long time tailor's store located in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) to purchase her iconic dresses.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Karua tried out various outfits while giving her preferences on the size and design to her longtime tailor, Flo Masinde.

The Narc-Kenya party leader was flanked by human rights activist, Boniface Mwangi, who was excited to meet Karua's tailor.

"My long time tailor, Flo Masinde, who has made many of my outfits," Martha Karua stated.

Masinde acknowledged that she had carved a niche for herself in the tailoring industry for years. She embraced the Buy Kenya Build Kenya initiative, pointing out that the clothes she had worn were made from materials acquired from Rift Valley Textiles (Rivatex) - famously known for supplying shirts to State House.

"This (pointing to the clothes she's worn) came from Rivatex, so people need to reconsider and forget about the imported ones. If you import the fabric then make sure it is made in Kenya. The Kenyan-made fabric is the way to go," she stated amid Karua giving a nod of approval.

Over the years, Karua is known for making fashion statements during political events. During the Azimio la Umoja manifesto launch at Nyayo Stadium on Monday, June 6, Karua stepped out in a classic blue kitenge (African fabric) dress that complimented Raila Odinga's navy-blue suit.

Politicians are known to arrive in style and elegance for political events. From Maasai beads to shukas, a number of female politicians embrace the African fabric knit.

In the recent past, President Uhuru Kenyatta has been advocating for the Buy Kenya, Build Kenya initiative, noting that the move would create jobs for the youth.

“This initiative accords Kenyans an opportunity to access quality, locally made affordable clothes with prices ranging from Ksh100 to Ksh600 for the same clothes that are sold at Ksh6,000 in the US and UK markets," Uhuru recently stated.

He added that the textile sector has created more than 22,000 employment opportunities over the past three years. He added that it had the potential of creating another 10,000 jobs.
