The National Police Service (NPS) has announced a change of guard at its airwing based at the Wilson Airport.

In a statement shared on Monday, July 5, Thomas Kabute, the new Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police was unveiled as the new Airwing Commandant.

Kabute takes over from Col. (Rtd) Rogers Mbithi who has been redeployed to the National Police Service Headquarters.

"As he takes over the new assignment, Mr. Kabute brings a wealth of experience and enormous capacity to take the Unit to greater heights.

"Col. (Rtd) Mbithi hands over the baton to his successor having steered NPS Airwing in the right direction during his tenure," the NPS statement read in part.

His appointment comes just days after he was promoted to his new position as the police AIG in changes announced on Friday, July 1.

Kabute was promoted to the position alongside nine other senior officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Others are Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso, DCI Head of Crime Intelligence and Research Bureau (CRIB) Paul Mumo and Coast Regional DCI head Bernard Barasa.

The NPS Airwing is a Unit of the National Police Service based at Wilson Airport, Nairobi along Lang'ata road.

It was established to support various functions of the service such as aerial support, emergency evacuations and other functions of security interest.

The change comes barely a week after Interior CS Fred Matinag'i moved Kasarani Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Peter Mwanzo to Nakuru to contain the situation in the region after a spate of gang attacks.

Following the transfer, Mwanzo has been promoted to the rank of County Commander.
