Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) exposed petrol stations selling adulterated fuel, risking the lives of motorists and other Kenyans.

Through a notice dated Friday, September 30, the regulatory authority noted that four stations distributed in different parts of the country were found retailing contaminated fuel

The listed stations which failed to meet the thresholds set under Energy Regulations 2013 were found in Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Bungoma.

A filling station in Kiambu county was penalised Ksh500,000 and ordered to upgrade the product after the fine was imposed.

In Kajiado, the entire petrol station was shut down for an unspecified period. EPRA explained that the facility was offering for sale diesel and super petrol adulterated with domestic kerosene and containing high sulphur

In Machakos and Bugoma, the energy regulator sealed all the super petrol dispensing pumps in the flagged filling stations.

"During the period July - September 2022, a total of 1,360 tests were conducted at 256 petroleum sites. From the tests, 98.44 per cent of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from four sites turned out to be non-compliant," EPRA's notice read in part.

During the same period, EPRA found one station which was selling liquefied petroleum gas cylinders without proper licensing. The station is located off Enterprise Road in Nairobi.

The case regarding the station is still under active investigation.

"The authority maintains a hotline number (0709336000), operational during normal working hours to enhance enforcement and compliance activities."

"Members of the public are requested to be vigilant and are encouraged to report any suspected cases of illegal trade of LPG in cylinders through the hotline number," EPRA stated.

The process of testing fuel retailing at different petroleum sites is meant to help the authority protect consumers from the danger of using contaminated fuel in the country
