The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has shut down ten petrol stations for selling adulterated fuel to Kenyans.
In a statement on on Wednesday, March 30, EPRA stated that during a continuous quality monitoring program conducted between January and March 2022, it established that some stations were selling diluted fuel while others sold fuel meant for export.
"Pursuant to Regulation 15 of the Energy (Retail Facility Construction and Licensing) Regulations 2013, the non-compliant stations and theier particular offences are listed here under," read the statement in part.
Bonee Transaction Filling Station, German Truck Engineers Limited in, and Bunyore Express were among those closed. Bonee was found to be selling diesel containing high sulphur while the other two had high-sulphur super petrol.
Masaba Station was found selling petrol mixed with domestic kerosene while Neema Filling station sold the same commodity but with high sulphur concentration.
EPRA has also forced several fuel retailers to close shop for selling fuel meant for export. Enjoy in Busia was found to be offering super petrol while Ilama, Ciumbu, and Hakisc sold diesel meant for export.
Notably, a fuel tanker transporting diesel diluted with domestic kerosene was stopped at the Isiolo Customs and Border Control Warehouse and was released after the owners paid a hefty penalty.
"The truck was released after upgrading the product and paying penalties amounting to Ksh700,000." EPRA wrote.
EPRA also flagged five liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distributors. In Nairobi, Kaka Gas which produces Valley and Tayo brands was warned for refilling and trading other gas cylinders for profit without the license's consent.
Salama Gas, which supplies the Salama brand was also flagged with a similar offense and supplying LPG without seals. Tanga Gas in Murang'a which refills cylinders under the Tanga and Viji brands had similar offenses.
In Kiambu County, Intagas Limited and Greatlakes Limited which supply tanga, viji and easi brands were also flagged. Unlike the fuel stations, the gas suppliers were warned and slapped with penalties.
