Matiang'i, who is currently a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Education will be assisted by Chief Officer Joshua Marwanga.

The new county minister adds his appointment to his portfolio in public service. On August 2020, the outgoing Treasury CS Ukur Yattani appointed him to the Public Service Superannuation Fund Board of Trustees.

In 2018, the outgoing CS's younger brother turned down the opportunity to become a commissioner in the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) citing the working hours as unfavorable to his routine.

A renowned educationist, he was elected as the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) National Treasurer in 2014. Prior to ascending to the position, Matiang'i served as a branch executive secretary.

During his days in the union, he established himself as a champion for the improvement of the welfare of teachers.

Matiang'i is a trained teacher registered with the Teacher's Service Commission (TSC). He holds a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Nairobi.

He specialized in Kiswahili and Geography and taught in several schools across the country. In between classes, the unionist cum tutor attended the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton,  where he attained a Masters degree in Education Administration.

Other CECs include Emily Ongaga (Finance, ICT, and Economic Planning), Jones Omwenga (Public Works, Roads, and Transport), Dr. Grace Nyamongo (Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Social Services), and Dr. Geoffrey Nyakoe (Public Service Management).

Alice Manoti, Dr Timothi Ombati, Benard Maina, Stephen Oboso, and Kennedy Angwenyi will lead the Agriculture, Health, Trade, Lands, and Education departments respectively.
