Detectives in Kisii unravelled that Maina Ochogo, the main suspect in baby Sagini's case, escorted his mother (Pacifica) to board a bus to Nairobi immediately after they reportedly injured the minor.

Identified as Pacifica, Ochogo's mother, who is also the aunt to baby Sagini, is seeking refuge in the city, according to the prosecutor who presented the case at a magistrates court in Kisii.

On Monday, December 19, the prosecutor told the court that police had launched a manhunt for Sagini's aunt. On the day before baby Sagini's eyes were gouged out, Ochogo and his aunt were said to have spent time together at home.

“These were the people who were last seen in the victim's company. The skeleton file indicates that Ochogo was in touch with the main suspect.

"Preliminary investigations lead to the charges of the suspect being an accomplice or part of the people to be charged as main key suspects,” the prosecutor revealed.

Ochogo was arraigned on Monday, December 19, before Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Ogweno ordered the police to detain him at Rioma Police station.

The main suspect, accused of gouging out the boy's eyes for rituals, will appear for plea-taking in court on December 23, 2022.

Earlier, detectives recovered a metal rod at the victim's home in Kisii county, which they assessed for blood stains and other components to be used as exhibits.

They also interrogated three suspects, including a form three student, for approximately 10 hours, seeking to unravel the case.

Baby Sagini's mother, Maureen Nyaboke, was also arrested and detained, set to be charged with child neglect.

Reports indicated that she separated from her husband and worked at a nightclub to make ends meet for the family. However, John Makori, the victim’s father, saved his wife from charges, arguing that she sent money for the children’s upkeep.

Baby Sagini was found dumped at his family’s maize plantation on Thursday, December 15, with his face covered with blood.

Doctors frantically operated on Sagini, hoping to restore his eyesight, but all was in vain as the incident had left the toddler blind.
