Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua swung into action less than 24 hours after Dedan Kimathi’s widow Mukami Kimathi made an appeal to President William Ruto.

The freedom fighter made the appeal on Saturday, January 14 after she was detained at a Nairobi hospital because of a Ksh1 million bill.

In a public statement, Gachagua lamented that no freedom fighter should go through that.

“I am saddened that Mukami, the wife of the hero of our freedom struggle Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri, has been ill and admitted at a Hospital in Nairobi,” the DP remarked.

He further acknowledged that he and the President had received the public appeal made by the widow through her daughter Miriam Kimathi.

“The matter was brought to my attention on Saturday, January 14, while on a working tour in Nyanza with President William Ruto,” Gachagua stated.

Gachagua assured Kenyans that the government will do everything possible to ensure that Mukami is discharged.

“To take care of the issues raised, I have tasked Embakasi Central Member of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru to look into her situation urgently,” the DP announced intervention measures.

He further promised to visit Mukami personally to ensure that everything had been taken care of.

“On my return to Nairobi on Sunday, January 15, I will make time to visit our mother to check on her progress and assess possible interventions to make her life more comfortable,” he promised.

Mukami who is a former freedom fighter, was admitted to hospital on January 5, after she complained of Pneumonia symptoms.

She was treated and was to be discharged on January 12, but the facility detained her because the family was unable to raise the medical bill.

Her family made a public appeal on Saturday, January 14, to the President and his Deputy to help raise the funds needed.
