UPDATE: 3 Fishermen Die In L. Naivasha Boat Accident

Three fishermen died after their boat capsized in Lake Naivasha, Wednesday night.

According to the Red cross, six fishermen were caught up in the Wednesday night accident three of whom have been rescued while the search for the other three continues.

The accident occured at Karagita beach in Lake Naivasha.

Trouble is said to have begun last night when six fishermen ventured into the lake to lay their nets ahead of fishing.

According to the chairman Lake Naivasha boat operators David Kilo, strong winds caused the engine-powered boat to capsize.

Three of the fishermen managed to hold to the sinking boat while the others were washed away.

One of the fishermen Daniel Onyango attributed the accident to heavy winds and the water hyacinth which has invaded a big section of the lake, the Standard reports.

Naivasha sub-county fisheries officer Mathew Ngila has challenged fishermen to ensure they fit their boats with safety equipment, noting that many of them did not have life jackets.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Naivasha sub-county referral hospital mortuary.

This is the latest incident in which casualties have been reported in boat accidents after two people perished in Lake Victoria last week.
