VIDEO: Young Man Forced to Go to 4 Different Counties In Search Of National ID

A young man in Turkana County has been to four different counties in search of an identification card.

The man of Somali origin says he has constantly been referred to Garissa county when looking for the ID, despite being born in Turkana.

He was among over 200 youth of Somali origin who camped at the county commissioners office in Turkana complaining of alleged discrimination during the issuance of national identity cards.

Speaking to K24, the man's mother complained that her son, like the other youth, had been born and raised in Turkana yet they are not considered residents of the county.

The youth said that since getting an ID in Turkana had become a task, they had opted to travel to other counties to get one, only to be referred to Garissa.

The youth, angered by the frustrations said it was unfair for them to be sidelined just beacuse of their origin.

The young men and women say they have missed out on several employment opportunities because they do not have IDs.

They added that they are always subjected to harsh scrutiny and investigations by CID officers and the NIS officers to determine that they are indeed Kenyans.

Despite that, they claim that they are yet to get the IDs.
