The Nairobi-Mombasa and Mombasa-Nairobi Madaraka Express train will from February 1, 2023, have a stopover in Voi, the first one on the express train.

This is after Kenya Railways on Sunday, January 8, issued a public notice informing the public about the introduction of the changes on the train's schedule.

Initially meant to be non-stop, the afternoon trains will pause for a five-minutes break at the coastal town before continuing on the journey.

"The 1500 hours Madaraka Express Passenger Service train will now make a stopover at Voi Station effective February 1. Passengers from the Mombasa and Nairobi Termini can board and alight the train at the Voi station.

"The Mombasa to Nairobi afternoon express train will now arrive at Voi at 4.38 pm and depart at 4.43 pm while the Nairobi train will arrive at 6,48 pm and depart at 6.53 p,m," the Kenya Railways statement read in part.

Consequently, the expected time of arrival in Nairobi was pushed to 8.18 p.m. while the Mombasa-bound train will now arrive at the Miritini Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station at 8.30 p.m.

The new changes were informed by the influx in demand from passengers commuting from Voi. Kenya Railways declared that it will open bookings for the new route.

"Individual bookings can be done through USSD code *639# or by visiting our website. Customers must arrive at least one hour before departure to have a smooth check-in experience," the firm wrote

Kenya Railways reiterated the bid was in line with its commitment to diversify its client profile across the country.

Passengers using the train will soon be able to effortlessly connect to the Mombasa central business district (CBD) from the Miritini terminus.

On January 5, the Corporation unveiled plans to link the terminus to the station in Old Town by refurbishing the metre gauge railway line.

More Kenyans have adopted to using rail transport occasioning changes by the firm. In November 2023, a new train was introduced to the Nairobi-Nanyuki route.
