Rescue missions are going on in Kitengela after intense floods made roads impassable forcing families to stay confined inside their homes.

Reports indicate that the flooding situation, caused by intense rain overnight, was exacerbated by a seasonal river in the area that burst its banks.

The Kenya Red Cross announced that it had kicked off its rescue mission at 4:00 am with a special focus in seven estates.

"We are currently on the ground assisting families to move to safety in Kitengela, Kajiado County, following heavy rainfall," announced the Kenya Red Cross.

"Our teams are actively involved in helping households along Deliverance Road, Balozi Road, Baraka Road, Blessed Court, New Valley, Changombe, and KAG area."

Three hours later, the non-governmental organisation revealed that it had rescued six individuals using inflatable boats.

Video clips that made rounds on social media show that the water had entered some of the storey buildings designed with flat roofs.

Across the seat along Thika Superhighway, motorists were stranded after the heavy downpour caused flooding along the busy road at Kahawa Sukari.

Separately, one person was killed and others injured after a house under construction in Kirinyaga County collapsed.

It is believed that the building was affected by intense rain pounding the country and it is not clear whether others are still trapped in the rubble.

This comes a day after President William Ruto ordered Kenyans living in areas prone to be affected by flooding to vacate within 48 hours.

The order affects all individuals living on fragile ecosystems including areas likely to be or already affected by flooding, mudslides, and landslides as well as those living along riparian lands. They should depart by Thursday this week.

"It is important that ahead of time, we protect the lives of people and that is why we have concluded the mapping of all areas that are in danger so that we can assist citizens to move away in time because the forecast is such that rain will continue for the foreseeable future and there is a lot of precipitation in many places," he stated.

"There are people looking to go back home. Do not be in a rush to return because the government will take care of your needs and we shall send experts to assess the land. If we get assurance of no further disaster occurring, we shall facilitate your return," he assured the victims.
