On Tuesday, April 23, the Kenyan government affirmed its commitment to continue defending Ukraine’s sovereignty amidst conflict with Russia.
The Ukrainian foreign affairs ministry revealed this following a meeting between the Special Representative of Ukraine for the Middle East and Africa Maksym Subkh and a Kenyan delegation comprised of political analysts and economic experts.
Subkh appreciated Kenya’s foreign policy stance remarking that the East African country was one of Ukraine’s reliable partners in Africa.
Following the meeting, the Ukrainian government professed hope for deepening comprehensive bilateral relations with Kenya.
One of the ways Kenya has continued to defend Ukraine is through voting on the relevant resolutions in the United Nations General Assembly according to Subkh.
Subkh remarked that through key UN votes, Kenya had been able to offer firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
“The Special Representative informed about the major international effort exerted by Ukraine to liberate its territories from Russian invaders and have underlined the need to restore the full-hedged functioning of the Black Sea grain corridor,” a communique from the Ukrainian government read in part.
The Black Sea grain corridor is a suspended initiative that had been signed by Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the United Nations that facilitated the export of grain from certain ports to attempt to address a worldwide food crisis, especially in Africa and Asia.
As a reciprocation, Kenya was told that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had successfully implemented the “Grain from Ukraine” humanitarian initiative.
Through this initiative, Kenya and other African countries would continue receiving food donations from Ukraine.
Kenya is also seeking to attract Ukrainian investors who would pump much-needed capital and expertise in the fields of agriculture, digitisation and innovation.
Notably, Kenya is a member of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, an alliance of over 50 countries that gives military aid to Ukraine.
