Police officers and civilians were forced to evacuate from Kitengela Police Station following a suspected gas leak.
This followed a recommendation from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) after receiving reports that someone had smelled gas within the police station.
This caused panic as coincidentally, there was a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) truck packed within the station.
Immediately, there was coordinated evacuation within a 500-metre radius from the truck.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kitengela OCS David Lemayian revealed that the whole incident stemmed from a miscommunication and there was no gas leak in the station.
He explained that the person who made the earlier remarks of a leak was not factual.
As a precautionary measure, experts were immediately dispatched to the station to ascertain the claims.
"The situation has since been contained, it was just a miscommunication someone thought they smelled gas and raised an alarm,” the OCS clarified.
“Experts assessed the situation and revealed that there was nothing to worry about."
The LPG truck is reported to have been involved in an accident along the Nairobi-Namanga Highway necessitating it to be brought to the station.
Despite the truck being involved in an accident, there was no immediate danger of a gas leak from the vehicle.
In February 2024, a gas leak from a truck in Embakasi is believed to have caused an inferno in the region that caused multiple deaths and destroyed property worth millions.
