The Transitional Presidential Council in Haiti has selected former Prime Minister Garry Conille to be the interim Prime Minister ahead of Kenyan police deployment in a few weeks.

Conille takes over from Ariel Henry who resigned after he experienced troubles getting back to his country days after holding a meeting with President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi.

According to one of the council members who talked to the press, Conille was chosen by six out of seven council members with voting power.

He was selected due to his background and experience with the Haiti leadership having served from October 2011 to May 2012 under President Michael Martelly.

The new leadership has been tasked with providing a recovery framework and work with the United Nations-supported peacekeeping mission led by Kenya.

Additionally, Haiti officials in liaison with the peacekeeping troops are expected to quell the violence caused by the numerous gangs and also create an environment for the new government.

The deployment of 1,000 police officers is expected to take place in the next few weeks. Kenya will lead the mission and will be supported by troops from other countries such as Benin.

Despite Kenya volunteering to lead the mission last year, the deployment has been met with numerous challenges including court cases and some officers backing down from the mission.

However, President William Ruto has assured Haiti that Kenya will lead the peacekeeping mission which has received major financial support from the US.

President Ruto on Friday during an interview with VOA emphasised that the deployment of troops had been ratified by both houses of Parliament.

He added that Kenya had met all international requirements by signing a bilateral treaty with Haiti.

Ruto noted that he had asked the Council in Haiti to recognise the agreement signed between the two countries in March.

"We will show up for Haiti the same way we have done in other countries. Kenya has been in 47 other countries supporting peace and Haiti is not going to be an exception," he told the media outlet.
