Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday re-arrested a convict serving life sentence at the Nakuru GK prison.

The convict who is in jail for defilement charges was tracked down by officers at the Keepleft area in Molo, Nakuru County.

According to a statement from DCI, the convict had managed to escape the prison but dislocated his arm and was admitted to the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital.

He was under police watch at the hospital before he got loose and fled with cuffs still stuck to his wrist.

A search party began to apprehend the suspect and the officers got wind of his whereabouts from residents in the area.

This was after the convict was seen by locals who realised that he had handcuffs hanging from one of his wrists.

"On getting the information, officers from Molo Sub-County swiftly arrested the suspect, and from him recovered the cuffs, a phone (mulika mwizi) a pair of inmates' uniforms and the County hospital records from his backpack," read a statement from the detectives.

The convict was taken back to prison as he waited to be charged for escaping from lawful custody.

Per the law, any person who escapes from lawful custody commits a misdemeanour and faces up to two years imprisonment, a fine prescribed by a judge or both.

This case from Nakuru is the second instance reported of a man escaping from lawful custody in the past week. Another incident was reported in Kirinyaga County where a murder suspect escaped.

The Uganda suspect is accused of killing his employer in 2023 before fleeing. He was arrested in May this year and was being held at the Kiamaciri Police Station before he escaped.

He was re-arrested days later awaiting to be arraigned in court to face murder charges.
