The Kilifi County Assembly was closed indefinitely on Tuesday after county lawmakers protested the arrest of their fellow Member of County Assembly (MCA)
During the chaotic session, the MCAs demonstrated complaining that Shimo la Tewa constituents were not well represented as their MCA had been placed in custody.
“We have closed down our Assembly, in solidarity with our counterpart who has been held in custody at Shimo la Tewa, we also want to express our solidarity with Shimo la Tewa residents. We stand with them in this moment,” the MCAs remarked as they staged their protest.
The MCAs also cited that they would continue protesting until their counterpart was released.
According to previous media reports, the MCA in question was said to have been arrested following an altercation that allegedly cost a boda boda rider his life.
During the altercation on March 27, in Mtwapa, the MCA escorted government officials to demand that persons who were not immediately revealed vacate from a piece of land that had allegedly encroached into and the property returned to its rightful owners.
According to the residents who were on the site, an altercation ensued between two rival groups.
This altercation resulted in the alleged hitting of a boda boda rider who had ferried people to protest alongside the MCA in question.
Media reports indicated that the protest descended into a near ugly confrontation after goons infiltrated the march and began hurling stones.
It was at this juncture that the boda boda rider was hit and critically injured before eventually losing his life.
Following the boda boda rider's demise, police officers arrested the Member of County Assembly.
Police confirmed that the MCA will be charged with manslaughter in relation to the incident.
