Kenya Met Issues Weekend Weather Advisory: Most of Country Dry, Rain Expected in Nairobi, Rift Valley & Lake Basin

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Friday, June 14, issued a five-day weather forecast for the period between June 15 and June 19. According to the forecast, most parts of the country will experience fairly dry conditions.

However, despite the overall dry weather pattern, the Kenya Met warned of moderate to heavy rainfall in certain areas over the next five days.

Rains are expected in a few areas within the Highlands East, which includes Nairobi County, as well as West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley regions.

Counties in these regions include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka.

Others are Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Nandi. 

Counties of Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot were also projected to experience rains.

Some of the above-mentioned counties would experience heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms while others would experience moderate downpours.

Most morning hours within the five days were expected to be warm and sunny, especially in the Eastern Highlands and the Rift Valley regions would experience generally dry conditions for the next five days.

Meanwhile, the counties of Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta.

Additionally, the coastal counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale would experience dry conditions for the first three days but would experience light showers in the last two days.

“Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are expected over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley,” read part of the Kenya met advisory.

“Strong southerly to south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are expected over some parts of the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.”
