President William Ruto continued to receive support for his peacekeeping missions in the African Continent and abroad.

This was after High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell Fontellles, on Sunday, June 16, revealed that Kenya would receive support from the economic bloc.

Fontelles, who also serves as the European Union Commission Vice President, made the remarks during a meeting with President William Ruto on the sidelines of the Peace Summit in Ukraine held in Switzerland.

“We discussed the most pressing issues of shared concern, from Ukraine to Gaza, the Horn of Africa, Sudan, the Great Lakes, the Red Sea and Haiti,” Fontelles spoke on the scope of their discussions.

“I confirmed the EU's strong support to Kenya, including for peace missions.”

In November 2023, President Ruto passionately appealed to the EU to support Kenya’s mission in Haiti.

“The support from the EU will be instrumental in bolstering the initiative, providing the necessary resources and legitimacy,” Ruto stated during a historic address to the EU Parliament.

Until yesterday, the EU had remained non-committal in supporting Kenya’s mission in Haiti leaving the country to depend on support from the United States and Canada.

EU pledged to support Kenya’s mission in Africa and outside the continent hours after President Ruto complained of Africa’s many long-running and long-forgotten wars by the international community.

Addressing the Peace Summit, Ruto told other world leaders that there are currently nearly 16 different conflicts raging on the African continent.

Kenya, under President William Ruto’s administration, has been instrumental in seeking peace efforts in various conflicts especially in East and Central Africa.

The country has made different levels of intervention measures to end conflict and war in Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia.
