The Ministry of Roads and Transport has initiated the process of increasing the Road Maintenance levy as proposed by the Finance Bill of 2024.
In a notice issued to the public, the ministry is inviting Kenyans to participate in the public participation exercise set to commence on July 8, 2024.
The exercise will run from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm countrywide.
“The Ministry of Roads and Transport proposes an amendment to the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (Imposition of Levy) Order, 2016, by increasing the Road Maintenance Levy on petrol and diesel.”
“Pursuant to Article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya on public participation the ministry, through this Notice, hereby invites members of the public and stakeholders to various public participation forums to be conducted on Monday, 8th July 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as follows,” read the notice in part.
Road Maintenance Levy is a charge imposed on all petroleum fuels imported to Kenya for home use.
The levy is deposited into the Road Maintenance Levy Fund for annual repair and maintenance of roads under the administration of the Kenya Roads Board.
Currently, the levy amounts to Ksh18 per litre of all petroleum fuels, with an anti-adulteration levy of the same amount charged on Kerosene.
However, the Finance Bill 2024 has proposed to increase the levy to Ksh25, an increase that will see the cost of petrol and diesel go up if the bill is passed as it is.
In Nairobi, the exercise will be held on the 8th floor of Transcom House which is the Ministry of Roads headquarters.
