Police from Migori County on Tuesday launched investigations into the death of a senior police officer at the Kegonga Police Station on Monday evening.

According to a police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the Kuria East Sub County Police Commander lost his life after accidentally shooting himself inside the police station.

The police officer who was getting a firearm from the armoury at 4.30 pm accidentally discharged one round of 9mm from the pistol while carrying out safety precautionary protocols.

The reports reveal that the bullet hit his left thigh severely injuring him which required him to be rushed to hospital.

"The officer was rushed to Kegonga Sub County Hospital and later referred to Migori County Hospital for further treatment in serious condition," read part of the police report.

Unfortunately, the officer was pronounced dead upon arrival due to excessive bleeding.

His body was taken to the morgue at the hospital for preservation pending an autopsy even as the National Police Service (NPS) initiated investigations into the matter.

The officer's untimely demise adds to the growing number of police officers who have lost their lives while at a police station. Some officers in the past turned their guns on themselves.

In June, a police officer also from Migori County shot himself dead in front of his family. The officer who was reported to have shot himself in the chest lost his life while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Back in March 2024, an officer from Laikipia County was found dead inside his house with a gunshot wound on his head. According to an official police report, the officer shot himself in the chin.

Some of these cases were linked to mental health issues owing to the nature of law enforcement jobs.

Various stakeholders including human rights groups have advised The National Police Service to ensure professional counselling services are availed to police officers to avoid similar cases in the future.

Counsellors, medics, and psychologists recommend seeking help whenever you experience any mental health issue. Call the Kenya Red Cross toll-free hotline, 1199, for support.
