Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday vowed to take stern action against people who reportedly perpetrated abductions during recent anti-government protests.

In a press statement, the CS noted independent constitutional and statutory agencies had already commenced investigations into the matter.

According to Kindiki once the probe is completed, the government will proceed to prosecute any person or official who will have been found culpable of perpetrating the illegality.

“The Government reiterates its duty to respect and ensure the protection of all constitutionally guaranteed rights,” CS Kindiki noted.

“The government will also not condone any violation whether perpetuated by security personnel or by public or private persons.”

According to the Interior CS, all Kenyans are protected from unlawful or arbitrary arrests, abductions, enforced disappearances or any other illegal method of confining suspected criminals.

In his announcement, CS Kindiki also disclosed investigations had been initiated against the organizers, planners and financiers of the recent demonstrations.

CS Kindiki further revealed that infractions or excesses by law enforcement officers would be investigated and appropriate action taken on those found culpable.

"All crimes that were committed against the people of Kenya under the pretext of peaceful demonstrations will be prosecuted once the ongoing investigations are completed," the Interior CS disclosed.

The comments by the Interior Minister come against the backdrop of recent demonstrations across the country that reportedly saw several Kenyans allegedly abducted.

During his recent engagement with Kenyans on his X Space, President William Ruto promised to take action against police officers who were implicated in the abduction of Kenyans during the protests.

Ruto reiterated that police officers had clear rules on how to undertake their duty of arresting suspects and abduction was not one of them.
