The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party on Friday called on President William Ruto to dismiss the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome and the Nairobi Region Police Commander.

While addressing the press, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna also urged the Head of State to take action against police officers who were allegedly involved in harming protesters.

The party further called on the government to compensate all the victims of the recent protests including those who were killed and maimed.

According to ODM, the decision to fire nearly all cabinet secretaries was a good start but the feeling across the country is that there still exists an atmosphere of fear.

"Ruto must immediately fire the IG of Police, the Nairobi Police commander and apprehend all Police Officers implicated in the murders of over 200 innocent," ODM stated.

"Kenyans in peaceful protests since last year. We call for a national amnesty for all persons arrested or charged in connection with protests and compensation for all victims of police brutality."

Nonetheless, Edwin Sifuna's camp said it was ready to support President Ruto's administration to come up with measures that could restore lasting peace and stability.

According to ODM, the new measures would help address long-standing issues like unemployment, the unending search for justice and equality, fighting corruption and negative ethnicity.

"This conversation in our view must come ahead of other conversations on the structure of our national governance going forward," Sifuna stated.

"As a party, ODM has never shied away from stepping up and having difficult conversations whenever the destiny of our nation is at stake."

ODM noted that the emerging issues and the urgent need to address them were not about rescuing the Kenya Kwanza regime. According to Sifuna, the nation was bigger than, and distinct from anyone.

"We therefore welcome these developments in the hope that they will mark the beginning of honest and earnest efforts to address the myriad issues expressed by disappointed and angry youths."
