President William Ruto on Saturday in a phone call with his Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called for cooperation and coordination among African nations.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and highlighted the strong ties between the Egyptian and Kenyan people.

Ruto and the Egyptian leaders also agreed to continue with consultations on all issues that affect both Kenya and Egypt in the future.

"They discussed means to address the challenges faced by Africa and agreed to continue intensified consultations in the future on various issues of mutual concern."

"They expressed their desire to further enhance the relationship between the two countries in the coming period," read a statement from Egypt's State Information Service.

Additionally, the Heads of state called for collaboration in efforts to attain stability, security and development for the African people.

This included exploring ways to address continental challenges such as violence and political instability. Further, the two emphasised the need to maintain the ongoing coordination pattern, historical relations and effective roles in Africa.

Notably, this call came a few weeks after President Ruto was expected to travel to Egypt in June after his South Korea visit.

However, the Head of State never travelled to a North African country. The reason for the change of plans was not made public.

Ruto was expected to attend a dialogue on ways to bring peace in warring nations such as Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Sudan.

This was a time when protests rocked the country with Kenyans calling for accountability and austerity measures from the President and those below him.

Following the protests, the President suspended all unnecessary travel to save public resources, among other measures to avoid wastage.
