National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula revealed the extent of damages at Parliament Buildings that occurred during the invasion on June 25, 2024.

While addressing the media, Wetangula revealed that property worth Ksh94 million was damaged during the incident.

The majority of the damages resulted from the breaking of furniture, digital equipment and a fire that caught part of the building.

Wetangula also divulged that Parliament Buildings were insured, therefore, the respective insurance company would be paying for the repairs.

"The damages caused as assessed by our insurer Ksh94 million. That is the damage we suffered. We had an insurance cover, so the company is taking steps.

"Work has started to restore the damaged buildings, furniture and TVs," he added.

Kenyans.co.ke established that Parliament has close to four insurance covers including fire and perils (buildings), fire and perils (equipment), burglary and terrorism.

As revealed in a 2027 tender document the value for property insured for fire and perils (buildings) was Ksh5.2 billion while that for equipment was Ksh1.4 billion.

The value of the property insured for burglary was Ksh1.4 billion. Property insured for any scenario of terrorism is valued at Ksh6.6 billion.

However, these figures may have changed owing to the refurbishments and construction work done since 2017.

Parliament was invaded in June during the anti-Finance Bill protests after the passing of the contentious bill that proposed several tax proposals.

Following the incident, police managed to arrest individuals who were suspected to have participated in the invasions.

Notably, according to President William Ruto, the invasion at Parliament was organised by goons who had targetted the armoury.

"How did the criminals know there was an armoury and a mausoleum in Parliament? They went straight for the armoury and mausoleum, indicating they were organised criminals," he stated.

As of today, no evidence has been provided with respect to the weapons lost and the individuals who attacked the armoury.
