The Kenyan government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday acted quickly to rescue a young girl who was held in Saudi Arabia against her will.
A Kenyan had raised an alarm through social media that the young lady was locked in a room and she was being denied food.
The whistleblower pleaded with Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu to take up the matter and rescue the lady.
He explained that the young woman had been taken to Saudi Arabia by a rogue agent who had since refused to help her come back home.
Additionally, it was reported that not only was the lady being denied food, but she was also being mistreated and beaten.
“They were not able to take the phone away from her. She cannot talk,” the whistleblower notified PS Njogu.
He also shared a video where the lady was lying helplessly on the floor unsuccessfully trying to cry for help.
“We have picked up the matter. The concerned division has been notified,” the State Department for Diaspora Affairs stated after receiving the video.
Six hours later, the lady was reported to have been safely rescued from captivity.
It was not indicated if the young girl would be given a flight ticket back to Kenya or if she would continue seeking green pastures in Saudi Arabia.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 316 Kenyans have officially been recorded to have lost their lives while working in various countries in the Gulf region with 166 of the total fatalities reported in Saudi Arabia.
Currently, there are 66,025 Kenyans working in Saudi Arabia with most of them engaged in non-skilled labour.
