Kiambu County Government has achieved a milestone by collecting Ksh4.6 billion in own-source revenue during the 2023/24 Financial Year.
This marks the highest amount collected by the county since the inception of devolution in 2013 and represents a remarkable 25% increase compared to the Ksh3.6 billion collected in the previous financial year.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi lauded the county’s efforts, noting the substantial growth in revenue collection since he took office.
"In my own calculations, when we got into office, the collection was around Ksh2.93 billion. We have been able to increase that to Ksh4.6 billion. We need to applaud ourselves even if we didn't reach the target because we did a good job," Wamatangi stated.
The Governor attributed this achievement to the collective efforts of the county’s administration despite facing several challenges.
These included a prolonged doctors' strike that disrupted healthcare services, widespread flooding in the better part of the fourth quarter, and technical issues caused by massive fibre cuts that led to an internet outage, severely impacting the county’s revenue system.
A county official echoed the Governor’s sentiments, highlighting the steady progress in revenue collection over the past few years.
"We have been able to increase our revenue progressively, from collecting around Ksh3.1 billion in 2021 to collecting Ksh4.6 billion in the 2023/24 financial year," the official remarked.
This increase in revenue collection is a testament to the county's resilience and effective revenue management strategies.
Wamatangi has been under fire over leadership wrangles in the populated county as MCAs threaten to oust him.
Additionally, the MCAs want the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) together with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to initiate an investigation into how billions of public funds have been spent under Wamatangi's leadership.
MCAs accused the county boss of turning a deaf ear to them in the appointment of County Executive Committees (CECs).
