National Assembly Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung'wah has refuted reports claiming that he is eying the Kiambu governor's seat in the 2027 polls.

Speaking during a development tour in the county, the Kikuyu lawmaker hinted that his differences with Governor Kimani Wamatangi were political.

He maintained that Wamatangi ought to focus on his job rather than fight him through proxies.

However, he warned that leaders in the county would rally behind another leader for the seat should the governor continue attacking them.

Ichung'wah also accused the governor of causing division in the county by using his allies to belittle elected leaders.

"There is no day that I will answer those leaders that have been sent by the governor. If he wants to come and face me, let him come alone. I am not interested in that seat today or tomorrow.

"We are saying that we can raise anybody to become the governor of this county," he threatened.

Notably, other leaders who accompanied Ichung'wah also echoed the sentiments of the majority leader, adding they they would continue to push for accountability in the use of the country's resources despite the numerous attacks from the governor's camp.

For instance, area Senator, Karungo wa Thang'wa, dared to involve various security agencies to investigate the alleged misappropriation of funds.

"I also highlighted my role in overseeing the governor's handling of billions of shillings that have been disbursed to the county. I have called upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to be alert," he stated

Political differences have rocked Kiambu since the August 2022 General Election, with the squabbles even surfacing during President William Ruto's recent development tour of the vote-rich county.

At the rally in February this year, local leaders including Ichung'wah accused Wamatangi of paying rowdy youth to shout them down during speeches. Other leaders including Thika Town MP Alice Ng'ang'a even declared their ambitions to unseat the current governor in the next polls.

Notably, the differences did not sit well with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua warning the leaders for ashaming the Head of State, a leader he likened to a king.

"I want to make this clear while still here in Kiambu, this habit of booking people at political rallies is not a behaviour of this region and as your leader, I do not want to see that happening again," he stated.
