Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sent a stern warning to politicians across the country, urging them to align themselves with the voters' expectations or face an uncertain political future.
Speaking at the wedding of the daughter of Juja MP George Koimburi on Saturday held at the Juja Preparatory School grounds, Gachagua offered a candid analysis of the current political landscape, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
Addressing attendees, Gachagua emphasised that the 2027 elections would be intensely competitive, driven by the electorate's increasing awareness and desire for accountable leadership.
"As we prepare for the next election, it will be very competitive," he stated, underlining the fact that voters have become more discerning and are closely monitoring the actions of their elected representatives.
Gachagua, known for his direct and no-nonsense approach, further elaborated on the critical timeline facing politicians.
"I am someone who listens to the voters, and some serious decisions have been made," he noted.
"By this December, decisions will have been made on who is coming back and who is going home, and after December, you cannot change anything. Those who are not in line with the voters have between now and December to fix their ways," the second in command explained.
The Deputy President's comments serve as a wake-up call to politicians who may have grown complacent, particularly those in his home region of Mount Kenya.
He pointed out that the silence of voters should not be mistaken for ignorance or approval, but rather a sign of their final judgment.
"Especially the people of Mount Kenya, if you see them quiet just know you are done, but if they keep making noise it means they are giving you chances," Gachagua remarked.
Gachagua's speech is likely to resonate across the political spectrum, as it underscores the high stakes of the upcoming elections and the importance of maintaining strong connections with the electorate.
His remarks also hint at an internal evaluation within the political class, where decisions about the future of certain leaders will be made based on their current performance and alignment with public expectations.
The Deputy President's forecast of a competitive 2027 election serves as both a warning and an opportunity for those in power to rectify their course before it is too late.
His comments come weeks after the political playing field in the country was shifted by bursting Gen Z numbers who pushed for reforms.
