The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) on Tuesday recalled S-Prazo (Esomeparazoole Magnesium Delayed-Release Capsules 40mg) Batch No SPZ-302 used to treat ulcers following complaints of a mix-up.

Esomeprazole is used to treat heartburn and certain other conditions caused by too much acid in the stomach.

It helps to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid backs up into your oesophagus. It also helps in the treatment of stomach ulcers.

According to the poisons board, some of the boxes were found to contain two different blister strips, for instance, S-Prazo Capsules and Donystatin tablets within the same carton.

Pharmaceutical outlets, healthcare facilities, healthcare professionals and members of the public were thus directed to halt further distribution, sale, or even use of the product.

Kenyans were further directed to return the drugs to the nearest healthcare facilities or respective suppliers.

“Given the above, healthcare facilities, healthcare professionals and members of the public to stop further distribution, sale or use of the product batch,” PPB announced.

While making the announcement, the pharmacy and poisons board assured Kenyans of its commitment to protect the public against sub-standard drugs.

Members of the public were similarly urged to promptly report cases of substandard drugs or adverse drug reactions.

"The reports may be made to the nearest healthcare facility or the Pharmacy and Poisons," the pharmacy and poisons board directed Kenyans.

The latest announcement comes hardly five months after the government cautioned Kenyans against purchasing Benylin pediatric 100ml cough syrup Batch No 329304.

This is after the product manufactured in South Africa was recalled by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria.

Benylin pediatric syrup is a cough suppressant that works by decreasing the feeling of needing to cough.
