Three people died on Friday in an accident involving a government vehicle and a lorry transporting Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) at Fort Tenan in Kericho.
Witnesses at the scene reported the collision occurred when the government vehicle rammed into the oncoming fuel lorry which led to the fatalities. The deceased include two males and one female.
All occupants cruising in the government vehicle died on the spot. This was confirmed by Kericho County Traffic Enforcement Officer Selina Chirchir.
Speaking to journalists afterwards, Officer Chirchir, revealed that the driver of the lorry sustained serious injuries and had been rushed to hospital
Underscoring the need for safe driving, Chirchir said, “We continue to urge drivers to adhere to all traffic regulations and avoid overspeeding so that we stop losing our people in accidents.”
Images captured from the scene of the accident showed the mangled wreckage of the vehicles, even as responders rushed to the scene to assist survivors.
Police officers subsequently arrived at the scene with investigations into the cause of the accident commencing immediately.
The deceased bodies were transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Muhoroni, Kisumu County pending identification by their relatives.
Meanwhile, The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported that from January 1 to February 11, 2024, a total of 3,090 Kenyans either died or got injured in road accidents.
Out of this number, 563 people died, 1,403 sustained serious injuries, while 1,124 were reported as having sustained minor injuries.
Pedestrians and passengers accounted for a sizeable share of the number, with 216 pedestrians losing their lives during the period under review.
