High Court Judge Anthony Charo Mrima has been elected as a commissioner of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

In a statement, the Judiciary announced that the judge was elected by members of the  Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA) who settled on Mrima at its male representative at JSC. The election  took place at Kisumu.

Judge Mrima is reputed to be a no-nonsense judge. In 2021, he issued orders jailing then Directorate of  Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti to four months in prison after he failed to obey court orders instructing him to return guns belonging to businessman Jimi Wanjigi.

At the time, several guns had been recovered from Wanjigi's palatial residence in Muthaiga. The government of the day, through its spokesperson Eric Kiraithe accused Wanjigi of being a nefarious criminal.

While Kinoti appealed the decision, Justice Mrima held his ground, ordering that the then DCI boss serve four months imprisonment at Kamiti.

In the same year, Justice Mrima delivered a landmark ruling declaring the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) positions that had been created by former President Uhuru Kenyatta unconstitutional.

In his ruling, Justice Mrima observed that no public participation had been conducted before the positions were created.

The judge holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights from Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

Admitted to the Bar in 1998, he has since established a distinguished career in the legal field. His expertise and experience have earned him a stellar reputation in the legal discipline.

In 2023, Justice Mrima was awarded the Law Society of Kenya's (LSK) Judge of the Year.

Beyond his work at the Judiciary, Justice Mrima has held various leadership roles. The judge has served as the Board Chairman of Coast Water Services Board and as the National Chairman of the Agricultural Society of Kenya.

Similarly, he has also served as the Branch Chairman of Agricultural Society Kenya (ASK) Mombasa and Board Chairman of Kilifi Water and Sewerage Company.
