Update, September 13: At least four people have been confirmed dead after a wall collapsed on workers who were constructing a sewer line at the Shauri Moyo area in Nairobi.
According to a police report, three people have so far been rescued from the site after the incident occurred at around 5 am.
At least six people were on Friday morning reportedly trapped inside an excavation site after the dugout caved in.
While confirming the incident, the Kenya Red Cross Society revealed that the tragedy occurred at the Shauri Moyo estate which is located in the suburbs of Nairobi.
The Kenya Red Cross further announced that it had dispatched a rescue team to the scene of the tragedy.
“An excavation site has collapsed in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi County. Six people are feared to be trapped. Response teams are en route to the scene,” the Kenya Red Cross announced.
In its update, the humanitarian movement stated that three individuals had been rescued from the site and rushed to the Mama Lucy Hospital.
Following the incident, the Disaster Management Team from the Nairobi County Government also arrived at the scene to help in the rescue operations.
"Three people have been rescued by community members while 6 are still feared to be trapped. More updates to follow," the Kenya Red Cross stated.
The latest development comes hardly four months after the Nairobi County Government lifted the ban on deep excavation activities within the city.
The ban which was implemented on April 29 this year, was instituted as a precautionary measure following the heavy rains witnessed across the country in April and May.
In his announcement, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Urban Development and Planning, Patrick Analo told the city developers that they were henceforth permitted to resume their projects.
However, Analo cautioned that strict measures would be in place to mitigate any potential life threats.
“Developers are urged to exercise the utmost caution to ensure the safety of all neighbouring structures,” stated Analo.
