The Ministry of Education on Monday flagged sensational reports circulating on social media purporting that several radical reforms in the Kenyan Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) had been made.
Through a statement, the Education Ministry termed the document which claimed that the junior school had been extended as fake.
"The Ministry of Education wishes to advise the public to ignore this fake content that is circulating in some online platforms," the statement read.
The timely response from the ministry came just as online steam was gathering around the fake memo, which detailed several supposed reforms.
One of the more sensational changes in the fake circular was the extension of Junior school to grade 10.
In the same fake document were proposals which included the transformation of sub-county schools to junior schools, financing of primary schools lacking nearby sub-county high schools, and absorption of junior school teachers into a junior school teacher staff structure.
This latest statement came as the county continues to completely phase out the 8-4-4 education system, which has been in place for decades.
The new Competency-Based Curriculum(CBC), which replaced the 8-4-4 system, has not been without its challenges, with renowned lawyer Nelson Havi moving to court in 2021 to challenge the new system.
However, his petition challenging the CBC was tossed out by a three-judge bench in June, as they ordered the Education CS to amend the education laws to align with the structure of the CBC in 120 days.
Sections of the public have argued that there were a lot of loopholes in the new system, faulting the government for allegedly failing to properly research on what it takes to effectively roll out a Competency-based curriculum.
The national rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum(CBC) happened in 2019, with the 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum tipped to be a game-changer in the Kenyan education system.
Under the new curriculum, the government is preparing to transition grade 8 students to grade 9.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said during a recent tour in Nyandarua County said the government was in the process of completing the construction of 11,000 classrooms nationwide to fully implement junior schools.
The PS, while assessing the level of preparedness for transitioning learners, said instructional materials have been furnished in all schools in junior and primary schools. Teachers had also been trained on the same.
