The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday confirmed the arrest a murder suspect who had been on the run after killing two people.
In a statement, the DCI communicated that the suspect was a wanted man after being accused of killing two traders at Kibuye Market in Kisumu County at an unspecified date over a dispute stemming from the sharing of proceeds from five washrooms at the market.
"After months of relentless pursuit, police officers from Kondele Police Station have finally arrested an elusive murder suspect," the DCI communicated in a statement.
The suspect, is said to have vanished into thin air after the gravity of his actions finally sank on him.
Police officers would then receive a tip off from members of the public on the suspect's whereabouts. Law enforcement agencies would subsequently launch a manhunt for the suspect that led to his eventual arrest.
DCI revealed the suspect was smoked out of his hideout in the Manyatta area in Kisumu Central, Kisumu County.
The latest case highlights a worrying trend where murder cases continue being reported every day. In January, 2024, the Kisumu leadership announced that it would be tightening regulation on short-stay rentals over a rise in crime perpetrated in such apartments.
In the notice, operators of short term rentals were directed to register their units within 30 days to stem the wave of crime reported in short stay rentals.
Similarly, in March, DCI officers nabbed two suspects in Dandora Phase IV found in possession of a phone acquired from a murder suspect.
During the sting operation, the officers confiscated 95 phones believed to have been stolen in various parts of Nairobi.
At the time, it was alleged that one of the suspects attacked his victim and stabbed them on the left side of the chest before stealing the phone.
The victim, according to the DCI, succumbed to the injuries while he was being rushed to the nearby Baba Dogo Hospital.
