Activist Boniface Mwangi's whereabouts have been revealed hours after he was taken from his home on Sunday morning.

The outspoken activist is being held at Kamkunji Police Station and is facing some serious charges amid a plan to infiltrate the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.

Photos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke show the activist's family members and colleagues at a press conference after rushing to Kamkunji to be with him.

According to his long-term friend and fellow Human Rights activist Hussein Khalid, Boniface has been booked under the charge of incitement to violence -  the same charges he faced in July 2024 at the height of the anti-Finance-Bill protests.

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, who was also at the Kamkunji Police station, termed Mwangi's detention as a violation of Human Rights.

Back in July, authorities were keen on detaining the activist for 21 days as they mounted investigations, but he was eventually freed on a Ksh 20,000 bail alongside four other suspects.

The bigger picture: In the build-up to the Standard Chartered Nairobi marathon, Boniface Mwangi was vocal on his social media platforms, calling on his followers to avail themselves for a parallel event.

On Saturday, the activist issued a final rallying call to his supporters, urging them to turn up for the marathon with the aim of making their displeasure against the Kenya Kwanza government known.

While urging his supporters to maintain peace, Mwangi further instructed willing participants to arm themselves with attires featuring anti-government slogans.

"Carry your flag, whistle, placard, and run to entrench justice within our borders," a post on the activist's social media stated.

Boniface's initial plan was to have a gathering at Uhuru Gardens, where the winners of the Standard Chartered marathon were set to be feted.

Amid heavy security, the marathon went on without a hitch as some key roads around the city remained blocked for a better part of Sunday morning to facilitate the event.
