The County Government of Nyamira on Monday, October 28, canceled an announcement that it made declaring a vacancy in the Office of the Speaker.
According to the County Public Service Board, Nyamira had decided that they would no longer be receiving applications to fill the position of speaker after the vacancy notice was revoked.
In an advertisement published in one of the local dailies, the County Public Service Board further cautioned members of the public to be on the lookout for fraudulent people claiming to be hiring for the position.
‘’Attention is hereby brought to the general public that the advertisement of the vacancy in the office of the speaker of the County Assembly dated 25th October 2024 has been revoked,’’ the Board shared in a notice.
‘’Please note that the County Assembly shall not be held liable to any fraud related to the said advertisement henceforth,’’ it added.
The development came just three days after the Public Service Board declared the position Vacant following the impeachment of its previous holder, Enock Okero.
Okero was impeached on Thursday mid-morning after 23 Members of the County Assembly (MCA’s) voted to support the impeachment motion.
Initially, the County Clerk had notified members of the public to apply for the position of speaker following the conclusion of the impeachment exercise.
"It is notified for the information of the general public that pursuant to Section 11(1)(c) of the County Government Act, 2012 (Rev. 2022) and Standing Order No. 60 of the Nyamira County Assembly Standing Orders, the Speaker of Nyamira County Assembly, Enock Ogori Okaro has been removed from office by way of impeachment. The Office of the Speaker is hereby declared vacant," read an initial advert from the office of the clerk.
However, the Board did not give the reasons for canceling the advertisement, just a few days after spending resources to place adverts calling for applicants to fill the role.
Okero was impeached over gross misconduct while at the helm of the Assembly chambers, following months of protracted battles over his conduct.
The political temperatures in Nyamira have been on the rise, with the County Governor Amos Nyaribo surviving an impeachment twice within less than 3 years after assuming office.
