The drama surrounding Standard Group is set to take another twist as former employees of the media giants are reportedly preparing a visit to their former employer at the company's Mombasa Road headquarters.
The visit will not be for pleasantries, however, as Kenyan.co.ke has learnt the former workers intend to demand their unpaid dues from the company.
Standard Group's financial woes have trickled down to employees, who have been the hardest hit by the company's current predicament.
Sources close to the situation have told Kenyans.co.ke that while some employees have been working for months without full pay, others took a chance to seek greener pastures elsewhere, thereby forfeiting their unpaid dues, albeit unwillingly.
However, the former employees have remained vocal about the salary owed to them by one of the oldest media houses in Kenya, and have hatched a plan to attempt to get their voices to be heard.
According to sources, a march has been slated for Thursday, November 28, 2024, to the Standard Group's main offices along Mombasa Road.
Some of the disgruntled former employers have intimated that the company owes them salaries to the tune of hundreds of thousands.
The company is believed to have failed to honour a one-year redundancy payment plan as was the agreement when some of the employees had their contracts terminated.
The former workers' planned march comes just months after employees at the company attempted to take matters into their own hands by downing their tools in the middle of a workday.
In July, the workforce went on a go slow at 12:30 pm and paralysed the station's 1:00 pm bulletin. At the time, at least 40 people attended a meeting that was held at Green Park Grounds inside Standard Media Group's Mombasa Road headquarters.
During the meeting, the employees reportedly resolved to visit every office and remove everyone from their workstations.
Employees from across different Standard Group media outlets including Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Berur FM, and Vybez Radio have lamented on living on a fraction of their pay since June 2023.
