A dormitory at Cardinal Otunga High School in Mosocho, Kisii County, was destroyed by a mysterious fire on Thursday, January 9.
According to witnesses, the fire, which broke out at around 6 pm, razed the dormitory barely two days after students had resumed their studies at the institution.
Moments later, firefighters from the Kisii County Government arrived at the scene and extinguished the flames with the help of students and locals.
Videos and images shared on social media showed the school dormitory completely engulfed in smoke as students watched helplessly while the flames consumed the building.
Similarly, the footage depicted the firefighters battling the inferno which had already consumed a chunk of the building. However, no fatalities were reported.
Speaking to the press after the incident, the school officials revealed that an investigation had already been launched into what the administration claimed could be an act of arson.
The incident happened hours after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba released the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.
Some Kenyans online speculated that the fire could have been linked to the school's performance in the 2024 national examinations.
Meanwhile, CS Migos while releasing results, stated that a total of 962,512 candidates sat for the last year's KCSE examinations compared to 899,453 candidates in 2023.
Additionally, the Education CS advised parents and students wishing to access their results to do so through the KNEC online portal https://results.knec.ac.ke/
According to the CS, about 840 candidates were involved in examination irregularities in 2024 and their examination results were cancelled.
The CS further revealed that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) would conduct new mid-year KCSE exams in July to cater for those who missed the last one.
