Aldai Member of Parliament Marianne Kitany on Tuesday, January 14, threatened to file a censure motion against Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi over remarks in which he criticised the government and called out the State regarding the spate of abductions in the country.
Kitany also called for Muturi’s resignation, faulting him for speaking out against a government of which he is a part.
"CS Justin Muturi should resign. He cannot critique a government of which he is a part; it simply isn't possible. If he does not resign, I will sponsor a censure motion against him in parliament,” Kitany stated.
The MP, a staunch ally of President William Ruto, criticised Muturi for addressing the issue of abductions through the media, claiming that ordinary wananchi were not in a position to assist him.
“Public Service CS Justin Muturi is a member of the Cabinet, where he can address any concerns he has. When he chooses to bring up the issue of abductions through the media, what does he expect ordinary Kenyans to do?” Kitany quipped.
Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday, January 12, at Serena Hotel in Nairobi, Muturi lashed out at the government demanding closure noting that he was appalled by his son's abduction in June at the height of the anti-government protests.
According to the CS, he felt compelled to reiterate the sentiments he expressed during a funeral service in Embu last week after his previous calls to security organs were ignored.
The CS revealed that despite being a senior member of the National Security Council when he served as the Attorney General, his son was abducted, and no answers were provided.
"One of the things we had accused the past regime of was the issue of abductions and forced disappearances. Today, there have been abductions and forced deaths, mainly targeting the youth," Muturi lamented.
"My son was personally abducted and disappeared, making us anxious, and at that time, I was the Attorney General of Kenya and a member of the National Security Council," he added.
However, Kitany held a contrary view, stating that the CS should have used his senior position in government to address the issue of his son’s abduction.
“Cabinet is the highest decision-making body in the Republic of Kenya. Justin Muturi is a member of this Cabinet, and it is there that he should have sought answers concerning the abduction of his son,” she noted.
Muturi’s remarks have sparked a raging debate, seemingly pointing towards a growing divide in the upper echelons of power over Kenya’s governance system.
