The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made headway in the murder case of vocal Nakuru activist Richard Otieno alias Molo President by arresting five suspects.
In a statement on Monday, DCI revealed that three of the five suspects were the actual perpetrators of the crime while two of them were bodaboda riders who ferried them to and from the crime scene.
In the course of the homicide investigations, the detectives determined that two of the suspects arrested had previously been arrested for assaulting him.
According to the report, the two physically assaulted Otieno on November 18, 2024, and were arrested and further sentenced to one-year probation.
This prior arrest was instrumental in identifying the two in the homicide case as they were forensically placed at the scene of the crime, with crucial evidence having been collected to aid their prosecution.
They are all still in custody awaiting arraignment to hear the charges.
The deceased was a youth leader and a fierce critic of local Molo and Nakuru political leaders. He was also an aspiring ward representative in the Molo Constituency before his untimely death.
Since his untimely death, fellow activists, ordinary Kenyans, and politicians have banded together to denounce the murder as his position as a government critic led some to believe his death was related to his activism
Even former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua joined the conversation a day after the murder posting, "As we mourn the death of this promising young man, who was a great human rights defender and champion, we call for justice. His killers must be brought to book come what may."
