At least 17 people have been affected by a devastating fire that broke out in Kariobangi on Sunday afternoon, the Kenya Red Cross has confirmed.
The Red Cross, in a statement released on Monday, detailed the extent of the blaze, which raged for several hours from Sunday afternoon well into the night, despite firefighters' best efforts.
According to the humanitarian organisation, no fatalities were reported, but property of unknown value was destroyed, with two schools also suffering heavy losses.
"For the last nine hours, efforts to contain the fire at Kariobangi Light Industries have been ongoing," the Red Cross revealed in a statement.
"Several business premises and two schools have been affected, with the extent of the damage yet to be determined."
Moments after the fire was reported on Sunday, emergency responders, including the Kenya Red Cross and other agencies, attempted to quell the situation while providing medical help to individuals who sustained injuries.
Initially, the Red Cross had reported that 10 people were injured, but the number rose to 17 on Monday.
Because of the extent of the blaze, efforts from the Nairobi City County and Kiambu County Fire Departments were required to contain it.
Witnesses have since revealed that one of the main challenges in containing the fire was the extremely flammable nature of items near the industries in Kariobangi, as well as strong winds, which kept reigniting the flames.
Incidents of fires have been prevalent in Nairobi in recent weeks, with another inferno reported in Kiambiu, Kamukunji Constituency, on the same day as the Kariobangi fire. This separate incident was attributed to a gas explosion.
On February 17, another fire was reported in Kiambu town behind Petan Plaza (which houses Pettans College) leaving business owners and residents counting heavy losses.
In another separate incident on February 7, a mysterious fire broke out at a tyre shop in Nairobi's Eastleigh Estate, destroying several items, including unused tyres.
