The Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, has announced evacuations for residents in certain parts of the country amid heavy rains to ensure their safety.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 10, the ministry called for heightened safety measures and preparedness as various regions continued to experience heavy rainfall.

“The heightened risk of flooding in multiple counties due to heavy rainfall calls for increased safety measures and preparedness,” part of the statement reads.

Murkomen warned residents living along the edges of rivers, streams, lakes, and other water bodies to evacuate, noting that these areas are prone to flooding during heavy rainfall seasons.

Evacuation from Riparian Areas

"Riparian areas are prone to flooding during heavy rains, posing a risk to life and property," the ministry warns.

It also asked residents to evacuate from landslide-prone areas, as steep slopes are vulnerable to landslides during heavy rains, endangering those living nearby.

The interior ministry also warned residents to stay away from incomplete buildings, as they could easily collapse.

Evacuation from Buildings

"High-density areas are at increased risk of building collapses due to substandard construction," the statement reads.

The ministry explained that various interventions had been put in place to ensure the smooth running of activities despite the heavy rains.

Murkomen further announced that security measures had been stepped up around bus stations and other strategic points to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

The ministry noted that the measures would also ensure that school-going children were not disadvantaged while commuting.

"Security measures are in place at all bus termini and other strategic locations to ensure the movement of vehicles and people travelling, more so school children," the ministry stated.
