Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered the reopening of all schools and health centres that were closed during the cross-border Transmara clashes.

In a statement on Monday, March 10, the CS, who met with a section of leaders from the two communities, asserted that following the government's deployment of additional security personnel in the area, the conflict has been quelled and calm restored.

However, Murkomen assured that the government would continue reinforcing security in the affected areas to ensure the smooth reopening of the institutions.

According to Murkomen, security personnel in the area have also been directed to apprehend any individual found carrying a weapon.

"Following inter-communal skirmishes along the Narok-Kisii border, the government immediately deployed additional security personnel to contain the situation. The conflict has been quelled, and calm has returned to the area," he said.

"I have also directed schools and health centres that were closed due to the security situation to reopen immediately, with security to be reinforced to ensure safety," he added.

Murkomen further assured that the government would hold two meetings with the communities to kick-start the peace-building process in the area and develop a sustainable solution.

"The government is committed to fostering peaceful co-existence and cohesion between all communities as a critical foundation for economic development and stability," added the CS.

The fights, which began a week ago along the Transmara West-Bomachoge Borabu border in Kisii and Narok counties, were over alleged cattle theft.

The long-standing conflict, driven by recurring livestock disputes, escalated into violence as rival groups engaged in battle using bows and arrows, leaving several injured and others nursing wounds.

Last week, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga called for action over the ongoing clashes.

NCIC warned that those actively orchestrating the violence would face legal action, while Odinga urged the National Government to take immediate steps to restore peace.
