President William Ruto’s motorcade was momentarily disrupted on Thursday afternoon after youths in Kibera, Nairobi County, sought his audience.
The incident ensued after the youths, who were mostly men, rushed toward the head of state’s motorcade as he entered Ayany Primary School in Kibra to commission a project.
However, police officers who were on high alert quickly intervened and began beating up the rowdy youths who managed to access the restricted school compound.
In the videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, armed police officers were recorded attempting to block the youth from accessing the institution, with the officers seen beating some of them up.
During the incident, several residents sustained injuries, with others seen rushing outside the school compound to avoid police confrontation.
Moments later, the officers locked up at the school gate as the head of state addressed the students. Nonetheless, adamant residents could be seen banging on the gate as they demanded access to the institution.
After several attempts, the residents overpowered the police officers and accessed the premises before they proceeded to Ruto’s meeting.
The latest development comes amid criticism of President Ruto’s development tour in Nairobi, which has since been marred by controversial incidents of muggings and vandalism.
Barely two days ago, video and images of youthful Kenyans stealing from residents during Ruto’s trip in Mathare and Ruaraka emerged, showing youths harassing shop owners and commuters.
The incident saw a section of Thika Road rendered impassable as the youths stormed vehicles plying the busy highway, stealing from passengers and other motorists.
However, detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have since intervened in the matter and arrested five suspects linked to the attacks.
According to the detectives, all those arrested were processed and subsequently arraigned yesterday, with investigations still ongoing to bring to justice additional suspects involved in these criminal acts.
