Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has spoken out about missing President William Ruto’s Kamukunji rally, denying rumours that he deliberately skipped the event to avoid Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Speaking in an interview with Milele FM on Wednesday, 19 March 2025, Wanyonyi dismissed claims that he was strategically avoiding Sakaja, his potential competitor in the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race.
He also denied allegations that he skipped the prayer meeting for Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) bid at Bomas due to personal grudges.
Wanyonyi clarified that he was out of the country for an important engagement during the Bomas event, stating that he had been informed about the meeting but was unavailable to attend.
"I was not at the Bomas prayer event for Baba because I was travelling. Some leaders had organised the prayers, and they were there to pray for him. I knew everything about it, but I was not around.
"I also missed the Kamukunji rally because I was handling some grassroots matters," Wanyonyi responded.
Wanyonyi added that Sakaja has not done much to improve the county and that residents are struggling due to his poor leadership.
He dismissed claims that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga had secretly supported Sakaja, saying Sakaja is seeking the former Prime Minister's approval and has been following him around to gain political backing.
Wanyonyi made it clear that Sakaja should not consider himself a member of ODM, insisting that he should remain in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
He further challenged Sakaja, stating that he was eagerly waiting for 2027 to defeat him, regardless of the party under which he runs.
"Sakaja always attends all of Raila’s events, trying to appear close to him, but he is only seeking his attention. Sakaja is the Nairobi Governor, but he is not a member of ODM.
"If he wants to leave UDA and join us, we will welcome him, but there is a long queue. If he wants to run for governor under the ODM ticket in the next election, then we will compete and see who wins," he added.
